Ninth Massachusetts Regiment takes part in the Battle of Malvern Hill in Virginia.

Col. Thomas Cass is shot in the jaw and seriously wounded. Brought back to Boston, he dies from his wounds on July 12, 1862. His funeral is described as the largest in the history of the city up to this time.
